Each Time I shut down the following windows appear.
If I don't click "End Now" on each...then shutdown stops.

First I get "DDE SERVER WINDOW"
Then "ctfmon.exe"
Then "Explorer.exe"

How do I debug and find why these are stopping shut down?

Microsoft Windows Network DDE server (DDE = Dynamic Data Exchange). Network
DDE is a technology that allows applications that use the DDE transport to
transparently exchange data over a network. For the layman a typical
application of NetDDE is chatting over a network where WinChat, or some
other chat program, will automatically be started by NetDDE when someone
else on the network calls you. In this particular example, without NetDDE
running in the background you would have to be running WinChat at all times
in order to instantly receive a chat message.

Recommendation :
If NetDDE is running on your PC it was probably configured in this manner by
some software that needs it to "do things" over a network, like the WinChat
chat program mentioned above, or Microsoft's Hearts networked game for that
matter. If you do not have such software running on your PC, or do not use
it, then simply disable or delete NetDDE with The Ultimate Troubleshooter.

I went and read the answer list on NetDDE. Turns out the only solution they
give to disable it is to purchase their software.
I'm looking for another method other than buying software.

Actually, I think the recommendation was to 'disable' the application,
unless you have some specific program that requires it. You can always
re-enable the app. No need to purchase more software.

How do you disalble it?

Start>Run>in the dialog box type services.msc click on OK.
You will see the Services window, scroll down to "Network DDE", right click
on it, select Properties. In the window that comes up, about halfway down,
you will see a dropdown menu for "Startup Type".........use the down arrow
on the right to display the options of Disable, Manual or
Automatic.........choose Disable.....Apply and OK out.
Heirloom, old and that ought to do it

I disabled it and the window still appears "DDE server window" when I shut
down.
It's buried in the system somehow.

I'm afraid I have exhausted my thoughts on this one. I suggest that you do
some research in Google and Google Groups...surely you are not the only one
experiencing this issue. One question, did you go back into the Services
window and make sure that the Network DDE was, in fact, disabled??
