When performing a normal shut-down of XP Home Edition, I
receive an error message relating to 'DDCMAN.EXE'.
Does anyone have any idea what this is about?
the knowledge base was less then helpful.

Hi Rondy,

Digital Distribution Channel, courtesy of that spyware called Wild Tangent.
You want to uninstall this crap. See:

I would suggest you also install and run AdAware from www.lavasoft.de and
use it to help clean the system.
