Shut-dow/Restart Box Randomly Pops-up then Goes Away & other issue

I'm not sure if this is a sigle problem, or one of a few that are from a
single source.

Randomly while using my system, whether in IE or a program, the shut-down
box will pop-up on the screen, my task bar and icons by the clock go away,
then just as fast as everything leaves, they come back to normal.

I have also started getting an error that says:

Buffer overrun detected!
Program C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal
state. The [rpgram cannot safely continue execution and must now be
terminated.

I got this error when I was going to post this question.

It was followed up by another error message:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience. etc. etc.
Then I sent a copy of the report on the error box.

I have no clue what's happening with my system. I am using the Microsoft
anti-spyware, CA Ez-trust firewall and anti-virus program. All are set to
"kill mode" :)

Any ideas would be appreciated,

Betty

Hi Mark,

I ran that last week, plus again this morning after reading your post and it
went through with no indication that any files were bad. After I went to
System Information and ran the digitally signed tool. That came up with only
1 file not digitally signed by MS and that was atapi.sys which I overwrote
with the original. I rebooted and no diference.

Also when I first booted this morning my quick launch part of the task bar
had turned itself off, not all of my start-up icons are showing by the clock,
then I got a "winlogon.exe" error which I have been getting off and on.

There is 1 main spam factor that I have been unable to find the source of
even after using, MS anti-spyware, EZ Trust Pest Patrol, Ad aware SE
personal, Trends online spam finder, and another onsite tool which escapes me
right now. The pages that are haunting me are the ones from winsoft.com,
mainly http://www.winfixer.com. I have it on all blocklists, yet it is still
able to scan my system for what it considers spam.

I was having the log-off screen error prior to the first time this appeared,
but am not sure if it is adding to my problems. I do know everytime it
appears I get the buffer overload error.

I would try a repair install, but unless it's that I don't know what's
supposed to happen once you start one, I've never had one work. I have no
Admin password which the repair mode asks you for so I just hit enter on the
password line and the prompt just takes me back to c:\windows where nothing
seems to be happening.

I know a lot of info for one question, but it all ties in together somehow.

If you cannot cure the pest, you should start over. A 'repair' will not cure the trash that has crept into your registry. I would
install windows to a new folder, and 'take ownership' of the old data files. It would mean reinstalling all your other stuff, but
would cure the problem

Hi Mark,

I just decided to restore a ghost file of my c drive from early June before
some of these issues showed up and so far, so good. Another reason why I'm
so glad the only thing I install on my c parition is Windows and programs
that don't give an install option.

Thank You for your help,

Betty
