Show the entire drive regardless of the BIOS capability???

K

Kenny S

Someone on these newsgroups posted this information:

"If you are running XP with SP2, and the 200G drive is a second drive
to the one that is already in the PC, run XP's Disk Management. It
should show the entire drive regardless of the BIOS capability. Use
Disk Managment to partition and format."

Is this true? If my bios:
Phoenix-Award BIOS v6.00PG
07/18/03
07/18/2003-P4X400-8235-6A6LXE19C-00

does not see the 200 GB drive in ints entirety will XPSP2 be able to use the
full Drive?

Why is ths infomation not available to the public? What bios supports what
hard drives....

Thanks in advance

Hi Kenny,

The BIOS has to be capable of 48-bit LBA and you must have at least SP1
installed to use a drive larger than 137GB on an atapi-connected disk drive.
A workaround is to attach the drive to a pci controller card (most available
now support it, and do not rely on the BIOS) rather than the IDE cable if
the BIOS does not support 48-bit LBA. Check with the motherboard maker to
see if the system supports 48-bit LBA or not, and if there is an updated
BIOS available that does. All this information is publicly available on
various support sites and manufacturer pages, you just have to search a bit
for it.

I have tried to find out if it supports lba 48 bit by:

-Calling my local dealer (they have no idea)
-Sending Email for support at matsonic.com (tried twice and never got a
reply)
- Searching the Matsonic site (found nothing)
- Reading the manuals (found nothing)
- Looking in the bios (found nothing)
- Searching Google, and Google Groups (found nothing)

now I found a page that has all the international branches of matsonic and
sent emails.

If that fails I will start calling long distance ( I am in europe) to
matsonic USA.

I have tried everything and I cant find this simple information......

If you can not get 48Bit LBA to work on your system then your main recourse
is to buy a separate IDE/ATA PCI controller card. This card does not rely
on the motherboard BIOS since it includes its own. It still requires SP1 or
SP2 in order to use the complete drive.

This is recent technology and revisions. It does support
LBA48. I did a search on Google for the BIOS and quickly
found lots of data. Here is a sample of what I found
http://www.48bitlba.com/
http://www.esupport.com/techsupport/index.cfm
http://www.phoenix.com/en/Customer+...oenixBIOS+and+AwardBIOS+Documents/default.htm
This is a two-line URL, if you don't have the entire link,
copy and paste it into your browser. This last page has all
the data on the BIOS.

The secret of doing a Google search is picking out the
subject, paste this into Google "Phoenix-Award BIOS v6.00PG"
to begin.

Is this true?

AFAIK it is not. XP will take the report on the disk's size sent to it
from BIOS through the DMPI

I know what I am saying .....

I know what everest is from lavalys... if YOU look closer it sends you to
www.esupport.com/biosagent/index.cfn?refererid=40
bios upgrades
and suggestions, when you click on BIOS, run it for your self and look.

I called them, they wanted 59.95 for a bios upgrade. My motherboard costs
45$ now...lol so the update would cost more than the motherboard.

Everest cannot give the information about if a bios can have 48 bit or not.

But I was finally contacted by matsonic, they told me for sure that the
current bios does in fact support larget drives than 137 gb.

Now I can go buy the disk knowing that it will work.

BIOS upgrade are almost always free from the mobo
manufacturer or computer company.

Here is what Lavaly's says...
