Show/Hide Hidden Files and Folders

Is anyone else seeing this problem? We have noticed on
most of our 130 Windows 2000 computers, that both radio
buttons are selected for the Show/Hide Hidden Files and
Folders. Windows still acts as if it is suppose to be
Hidden. This is pretty irating, especially on our IS guys
computers.

You didn't really tell us the specific problem but Explorer|Tools|Folder
Options|View, then radio button for "Show hidden files
and folders" *and* also uncheck the box for "Hide protected operating system
files". Two separate attributes here.

Under Tools --> Folder Options --> View --> Hidden Files
and folders. Both options are selected. If you select
either one and then close and go back in, they are both
still selected.

Both radio buttons at the same time? Never heard of this one before.
Possibly some corruption in the image the machines were built with.

Yeah, both. The corrupt is what we thought, but we have
tried a brand new pc and end up having the same problem.
We would install one piece of software and then check each
and every time, and then it would just pop up.

Is this a clean install or image? Does it happen if you don't allow the
group policy to be applied? I think it's got to be one or the other; image
or policy.

Are you local admin? Is there a domain or local GPO in operation?

Yes I am the local admin. We are running on a NT 4 domain
server and Novell 4.2 File\Print Server. We do not see
the issue for awhile and then it just appears. Very odd.

I have seen it with or without the image. We do not use
Policies at all.

You mentioned a particular software install that causes this. You might
contact them on the issue.

Look in Registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

under : Hidden REG_DWORD

Hidden = 1 - show hidden files and folders
Hidden = 2 - Do not show

Does this help?

Hi Mark,
Thanks for this. It brought me back to my senses. I was thinking on another
level since this affects almost 130 machines when in fact this would be a
user level setting as you reminded us. After checking the setting the next
step might be to create a new user and check the Reg_Dword value of "Hidden"
immediately after logon. Having both radio buttons selected within Explorer
almost sounds like the shell was replaced.

Ah yes, that's true. Creating a new user would allow a clean slate to check the settings.
