Should storage disks be defragmented?

If you devote a disk to backup, is it necessary to defragment that disk?
 
OK, put it this way--what harm if any is there in NEVER defragmenting a
disk devoted to backup.

Absolutely none.

Defragging has a marginal impact on performance, but that's only if the HD
structure is grossly fragmented to begin with.
However it does help with low level data recover.

As far as backup devices are concerned, who cares? Speed isn't an issue and
neither is data recovery.
