Should Only One Firewall be Active?

I recently had trouble accessing the Internet; disabling
my 3rd party firewall (V-COM's SS4, leaving just the
Windows XP firewall up) made all OK again, and a System
Restore got me back to both running at once. But is it
possible they conflicted? I know you should not run two AV
programs on the same PC, but I never heard there was a
problem with two firewalls....and until now, it's worked
for a year just fine. Or have I been lucky?

No one I have ever seen advocated more than 1 firewall running at a time.
