Should I wait to buy a CPU?

Been out of the loop for about 4 years. Has there been a new cpu
release announced recently? The reason I ask is because as soon as the
latest thing comes along the price comes down on what I want which is
an AMD 64 in the 2G+ range for around $100. I'd like to get the multi
thread capability but I don't want to pay for the duel processor in
one chip thing. (opteron?). Also, what is the difference between
northwood, venice core etc. Last time this was called athlon and duron
with one being a half brain sister of the real deal. I need to do cpu
intensive things for audio but it doesn't need super video
performance. I'm not an overclocker but I have built maybe 10 pc's. If
I can get it to run at the advertized speed I'll be happy. I'm looking
at the 939 boards with nvidia3 chipset, not the four and a lower end
AGP video card in the under $100 range without a fan if possible. I
need to use my old ATA100 drives. I have 3 and a DVD burner. Well,
that's all I can think of, I'd really appreciate any advice from
people with more current info. Thank you. hc.

A few months ago I picked up an AMD 64-3000+ (Venice core) from
Computergate.com for $140. A couple of weeks later the price jumped another
$20. You can possibly get Semprons (smaller cache) in the $100 range, but
most likely will have to buy used if you're looking for that kind of price
at the moment.

nVidia 3 chipset is a dog. It especially had video problems
with nVidia "video" cards .... and that resulted in the nVidia 4
chipset.

GA-K8NF-9 mobo with AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and 1 gig
single stick Kingston ram ddr400

Get the mobo bundle at Mwave.com ... for warranty purposes,
and put it in an Antec SLK1650B case.

Sony DVD-RW ... because the NEC, and LITEON are both
noisy as hell, and will really annoy you.

Hitachi 160 gig SATA .. Maxtor will fail due to bad spots.

Floppy .. for recovery.

Video card .. well X700 pci-e is a good all around workhorse.
Not great for gaming, but will do it. I benched one with
3DMark2001 at about 8000 ... low end of OK.

All that junk you have ... is going to buy you a lot of
grief and wasted time, and will drag your new mobo in the
dirt. In cases like that, I advise checking the nearest
university bulletin boards and picking up a "student"
computer.

There are variants with different pricing. I got a socket 939 Athlon
64 3000+ for $126 (including $7 shipping) from Mwave.com, a couple of
months ago. The one I got was ADA3000BXBOX, which I did not see
listed for socket 939 when I used the search utility on
motherboards.org just now. They have them for socket 754 at the same
price I paid. Other variants are all higher.

I got an nf3 board for about $55, and it seems fine, but I'm not using
an nvidia graphics card.

Invest your money in RAM. You want to see your old computer do new tricks?
Get about 2 gig of ram

OOPs! I was wrong... I have a socket 754 board. That's why my 3000+
was cheaper.

Maybe, but sometimes you provide misleading information. Sometimes
I find your efforts are humorous, but sometimes the joke/whatever
and your motive is obscure.

Do you have any evidence backing this up apparenty bias up? I've been
running an ASUS K8N-E Deluxe with either a GeForce 5900XT and then a
6600 GT for over the span of two years now and not had one problem with
these 'video problems' you're a pro at proclaiming. I USED to have an
MSI K9N-Neo Platinum (almost mirror motherboard to the ASUS) but had to
change it out due to a problem that had nothing to do with the video, by
the way, but ASUS was there to clean up the mess for me. Will always buy
ASUS boards for my power PC from now on.

He obviously knows his shit, but he doesn't explain his conclusions
very well. Why, for example, doesn't he like Asus motherboards?

I think maybe johns should have a couple drinks and allow himself to
ramble a bit.

That's not what I'm talking about.

I think you have it backwards. Judging by your frequent advocacy of
drug use, apparently you think you are too tough, but in fact life
presents enough of a challenge without handicapping yourself. For
your sake, hopefully someday you will realize that.
