i got home from work today and turned on my pc. when it
booted up i had 2 new shortcuts on my desktop, 1 is dell
home and the other is ebay.com. why and how did those
shortcuts get placed on my desktop?

Did you visit their respective sites ? If "yes" each one probably placed
their shortcut there; probably safe to delete if not wanted. If "no",
re-post and others may have answer.

Who was on the computer before you got home?? At any rate you can right
click on them and delete them.
