Shortcuts to icon's not working properly

A few times lately I have found that when I click an icon on the desktop
that instead of the program opening I get a pop up box which is
offering to show the shortcut properties. How do I
stop this from happening?

See if this command helps from Start, Run:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
and
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

If that does not help, get the .LNK association fix from here:
