SHORTCUTS TO DESKTOP

I am having a problem with.. when I'm on a page (website) that I want to
place a shortcut on the desktop, I right-click on Add a shortcut, etc., and
it
acknowledges that it has, but there is no shortcut icon on the desktop. If
I download a program from the internet, it places a shortcut on the desktop.
There is plenty of space on the desktop, so it's not maxed out.
There are other times, when I start up the pc, some shortcuts that were
there previously have disappeared.
Any idea what is going on and how to correct this?

I have two similar choices on my IE right click menu but neither one has
the same wording that you've used in your post:

Create Shortcut : adds a shortcut to the desktop (have to click the
confirmation during the process)

Add to Favorites : adds a shortcut to Favorites; no desktop shortcut
created

Are you using Internet Explorer or another browser? If using IE, are you
seeing the same choices or different?

Sometimes I click one when I meant to click the other and then have to
track down my shortcut. I also use two monitors so sometimes have to do a
refresh (press F5) or a quick Arrange Icons By... to get the added desktop
shortcut into view.

Downloading a program from the internet (clicking Save) should *not* add
shortcut to your desktop. It should copy the setup file to whatever folder
you direct it to. Desktop shortcuts might be created later when setup runs
but they are not normally created by downloading only. SIDENOTE: Not to
confuse matters but you *might* see a shortcut in Start> Recent Documents
after downloading/saving a file from the internet but shortcuts in this
location are temporary in nature.

If you are installing from the internet (clicking Open), you may want to
change that practice. There's more chance for errors during the install and
you don't get a copy of the setup file to save for backup purposes or to
examine with an antivirus program before using it.

Hi Sharon .... thanks for responding to my question.

I get a similar statement that you mentioned.

When I right-click, I get a list of various choices.
In that list is a choice named "Create Shortcut", and when I select that
choice, I get a statement of "A shortcut to the current page will be placed
on your desktop".
I am currently using "Avant" browser, which I have used for about 2 years,
and it has treated the shortcut choice with no problems. This has seemingly
begun just recently, but as far as I can tell, did not occur with any
particular change.
In regards to the shortcuts when downloaded a program, I should have added
that the shortcut appears AFTER installing the program, and usually adds its
own icon as the shortcut on the desktop.
I hope this might state the problem more clearly.
Thanks

Amber, have you made changes to Windows since Avant was installed? Maybe
added SP2? If yes, try reinstalling Avant. Not sure it will help 100%
since you say that sometimes an added shortcut just appears out of nowhere
but it may help to make the shortcut procedure a bit more consistent.

Hi Sharon ....
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and the problem remains.
I guess I'll just set the page to Favorites so it will be there and I can go
back and pull up.
