Shortcuts not working

Shortcuts at the top right of the start menu and on the desktop do not
function - for my computer, my documents, my pictures, my music. Right
clicking them for properties shows the targets are there. The only way to
open these programmes is via keyboard using windowskey + E which opens
windows explorer.

This is a new problem which maybe due to a recent windows update which
installed automatically. I'm using Xp Home Edition SP3. Can anybody please
advise how to restore these short cut functions?
