I would create a formatted AutoCorrect. Set up what you want, select
it, choose Tools | AutoCorrect, make sure the radio button for
"formatted" is selected, and give it a code, say rck (for red check).
Then when you type rck and hit space or punctuation, AutoCorrect will
transform rck to your red checkmark.
Thank you! I have also been told to use the review bar and specify the
colour you want for your insertions. Perhaps this is another way of saying

Not at all the same thing. My suggestion actually changes the text in
your document. The Reviewing Toolbar sort of adds a virtual layer of
text changes atop the text you already have. You should read about

Either method may work, but they do very different things.
