Shortcut Overlay Arrow

Shortcut Arrow

Is it possible to disable the little shortcut arrow that gets overlaid on the bottom left corner of shortcut icons?

Or better yet would be to locate it about 8-10 pixels further left so it doesn't overlay the icon.

Hi

You can alter that option via Tweak UI which is available from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

When installed, go to:

Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI. Expand Explorer then click on
'Shortcut'. There is a warning message with changing this option.

Shortcut Arrow

My registry (XP Home SP2 clean install) doesn't have a "Shell Icons" key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\" .

Remove or modify the arrow used on shortcuts:

Hi,

If the key does not exist. create a new one.

Edit menu > New > Key

However, I prefer Tweak UI (light arrow) method.

I used the following method.

Renamed "IsShortcut" to "Is_Shortcut" for the following three
HKey_Classes_Root keys, lnkfile, piffile, and InternetShortcut.

Hopefully there won't be any side affects.

Well seems that method causes IE to think it's no longer the default browser
and when it re-establishes it's self as the default browser it adds
"IsShortcut" back into the registry key.

On another note, the Explorer\Shell Icons "29"
"C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll,50" method doesn't remove the little arrow
on my XP Home SP2 clean install. Shell Icons key wasn't there by default
either so it really doesn't surprise me it doesn't work.

Still searching for better method. Please post ideas.

Works fine here (XP SP2). You will need to restart Windows for the changes to take effect. If that does not help, or to apply the change instantly, try this:

Right-click Desktop, choose Properties, Appearance Tab.
Click Advanced button, choose Icon from the drop-down list and set it's size to 31
Click OK and close the dialog
Repeat the above steps and set the Icon size to 32 (defaults)

Well it's working now. Two things to note. Reboot doesn't seem to apply
the change to the icons, I though a reboot would. That's the first reasons
it didn't work for me at first. Also I did icon 31, ok, icon 32 ok, apply,
the first time around and that doesn't work either. What works is icon 31,
ok, apply, icon 32, ok, apply.

Thanks

P.S. Are there any know side affect to this reg shell icons change?

You're welcome!

No side-effects seen here, using this method. Only problem is that you'll face a tough time identifying shortcuts vs folders. That's the reason many suggest "light arrow" rather than "no arrow"

Transparent Icon

"Only problem is that you'll face a tough time identifying shortcuts vs
folders."

Right click properties for the occasional times I need to know. Or for
times of house cleaning set it back temporarily.
One side affect I noticed was that the icon 31, 32 change required to redraw
them without the arrow rearranges them all to the left side of the screen.
Ugh.

But, I don't consider that as a side-effect. Dynamic updation of the icon views always causes this (desktop icons rearranges). Tweak UI repair function exhibit the same behavior.
