Shortcut or Icon to Character map

Jim

I would like to create a shortcut key to the Windows
Character Map (%SystemRoot%\System32\charmap.exe).
However, the existing shortcut (C:\Documents and
Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System
Tools) does not allow me to enter a shortcut key.

Is a shortcut key possible?

If not, how can I put an Icon on my Quick Launch part of
the task bar to do the same thing.

I use the character map constantly in doing data entry in
Excel, and having to go through
Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Character Map
is a royal pain.

Thanks for the help.

You can't put is on QL and have keys work. Only Start menu or Desktop. You probably don't have permission to edit the All Users shortcut. Make your own shortcut and then it will be yours so you can edit it. Or ask your administrator to reduce security on it.

Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Character Map>>Right
click on it>>Send to>>Desktop (Create Shortcut). If you want, you can
drag it from the Desktop to the Toolbar. An icon will be left on the
desktop, but you can delete it.

Hi Jim,

A shortcut key is possible Just click on Start >> All programs >> Accessories >> System tools and
right click on the character map shortcut and click on properties and then you can enter a keyboard
hotkey combo in the property sheet.

However, you can also put a shortcut to the character map in the quicklaunch tray. Just open the
folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

and create a shortcut to %SystemRoot%\System32\charmap.exe
