shortcut keys, one by one, magically disabled

So one day I'm working in Word and I try to update fields in my document by
doing Ctrl-A and then F9. Well, Ctrl-A works but F9 doesn't update fields
anymore.

This is not the only Microsoft program that this is happening to.

In Powerpoint Shift-F5 (start show from where you are) doesn't work anymore
either.

I'm not the only one who this has happened to at my company. If bring the
document or slideshow to another machine these keys work just fine. The
keyboards are the same in both places and I've not done, to my knowledge,
anything to change any default settings.

Anyone have any ideas?

Shift+F5 only works in PPT 2003, can you confirm that is the version you are
using?

Yes. Shift-F5 has worked in the past on my machine and it actively works on
other machines. This feature has somehow become disabled along with other
select shortcuts in other MSOFT products.

Mike,

I lost <Shift + F5> the other day and then it came back. Can't explain it,
I'm afraid. Spill any coffee on your keyboard <vbg>?

One of the things I would check is the input locale settings. Do the
following in Windows:
1. Select "Start" | "Control Panel" menu item.
2. Launch the "Regional and Language Options" applet.
3. In the "Languages" tab, click "Details..." button.
4. In the list of "Installed services" box, check what all input locales are
installed.
5. If you are using more than one input locale, you might have accidently
switched to a different input locale (which can be usually done by using the
Left Alt + Shift key combination). You might want to remove all input
locales except one and see if the same problem can be reproduced.

The input locales as such should not affect the function keys (F5 in our
case) but it is better to check.

Nice call. That seems to have done it.

I had a handwriting recognition and voice recognition locales. I removed
them and things seem to be back in order.

Much appreciated.
