I just reset my Dell Dimension 510 to factory.
Before I did this I was able to set up shortcut keys for every program I had
(ie: Excel-cntrl+alt+e, Word-cntrl+alt+w, aol -cntrl+alt+a, etc)
ever since I reset my Dell (cntrl + f11 upon bootup) I am unable to create
shortcut keys for the various programs.
When I select a program, right click and tab down to shortcut key, when I
hit the ctrl+alt key it puts + + in the shortcut field and won't let me
create a shortcut for ANY program??
How is the + + being inputed when I am actually selecting the cntrl + alt
key??

Please help!

George,
For a new shortcut, the "Shortcut key:" box says [ None ]
Do not press [Ctrl] or [Alt]. Just press the letter E.
That will show [ Ctrl + Alt + E ]

I just tried the instrucions you gave me below and that didn't work.
I right clicked on the program/properties/ tabed down to shortcut and tried
just entering the letter E (or whatever I want) and it STILL puts in the + +
when I type the letter??

HELP!?!?!?!

Before I replied to your first post, I created a new shortcut-icon to
a text file. In the "Shortcut key:" box I pressed [Ctrl] and [Alt]
and got [ + + ], just as ypu do. But, when I started again, and pressed
'E', I got [ Ctrl + Alt + E ]

However, after readimg your reply, no matter what combinations I try
now, it always works. Strange!

If you create a new shortcut-icon pointing to a text file,
do you still get [ + + ] ?

Shortcut-icons to Word, Excel (and possibly AOL) are not standard
XP shortcuts - look in Properties > /Shortcut\ > "Target:" will be
dimmed, and not a path to a program. If you create a new shortcut-icon
pointing to the supplied Word shortcut, do you still get [ + + ] ?

This fault happened after the "Factory Reset". Have you rebooted since
then? Have you installed anything new, which had not been installed
prior to the reset? If nobody else here offers a solution, you might
have better luck at the Dell forums.

I was able to create the shortcuts keys for all the programs I wanted to.
THANK you for your help.
I had to get the shortcut field, get rid of the + + so it had "none", hit
apply, ok. Then went back in and just typed A_AOL), w(MS Word), etc.
Still shows the + + in the shortcut field and NO A, r W, but it works now??
