Adding to Keith:
Or use the icon file here:
http://www.winhelponline.com/fixes/blank_icon.zip
Does not contain the light border, which imageres.dll does.

I'm not trying to be mean, but that is the WRONG way to get rid of the arrows & the
'shortcut' suffix. It can have adverse affects on other funtionality.
To remove the shortcut arrow overlay icon, specify a transparent icon here:
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons"
Value Name: 29
Type: REG_SZ
Data: C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll,11
That icon does show a faint square outline, it's just used as an example.
To remove the ' - Shortcut' suffix, modify the value named "link" found under:
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer"
set it to 00 00 00 00. Log off & back on before creating any new shortcuts.

This gets rid of the arrows permanently.
1. Open Regedit (Start -> Run -> type "Regedit") (withoutquotes)
2. Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> lnkfile (LNKFILE)
3. Delete the following key "IsShorcut"
4. Close REGEDIT and Restart your computer.
After applying this tweak it is necessary for you to RESTART your machine so the new settings take effect.

Does anyone know if it possible to get rid of the Shortcut 'arrow' that appears on desktop icons?
Used to be easy in XP via TweakUI. I am sure I have seen a tip where this can be done in VISTA, but I have lost the detail.
Thanks in advance.
