shift+left click

I came across a problem with deleting multiple files at a time. When I use
shift+left click to delete multiple files it marks more files than chosen. Is
there a fix for this problem? I am on a windows xpsp2 machine.

Thanks Brian,
The problem is that if I wanted to select, let's say a row of 8 files by
using the shift+left click, the selected 8 files are selected for deletion
but there are more files, maybe 6 or 7 files that I haven't selected are
highlighted for deletion.

Bian, it doesn't matter if it's a vertical or horizontal. This problem
happens on both.

One of the problems with using Windows Explorer to handle file management.

Get yourself a real file manager program. Yes, you do usually have to pay
for them, but they offer very fine control over whatever you want to do with
your file system

An extremely good one is Total Commander from http://www.ghisler.com/ and
you get a fully functional program - not cripple ware - for testing.

The query is about the desktop, not Explorer.
If I want to use the Explorer for managing files in the Desktop, I
would type a dot in the Run box and press Enter. Then open the Desktop
folder in the explorer. For selecting Desktop files for deleting,
copying, moving ...etc, I find this method easier, and much SAFER.

Where in the original post, or his subsequent posts, does he mention that he
is working with the desktop? He is referring to "files", not shortcut icons
or links to files.

If you're using thumbnail, tile or icon view that's what will happen.
If you want the third row of 8 icons and you use shift+lc on the 8th icon
in that row, you will get all 3 rows.
If you click on the second icon in the second row and shift+lc the sixth
icon in the 3rd row, you will get everything in a horizontal order from the
second icon in the second row to the sixth icon in the 3rd row.
AFAIK selections work on the horizontal and not the vertical. If you
click the first icon in the first row and then shift+lc the first icon in
the fifth row you will get everything in between including each of the
first icons selected.
To select/deselect single icons one at a time, use ctrl+lc.

Pice View/Details. Makes such navigating and selecting much easier.

Shift+Left click will select ALL files from the TOP of the list down
to the Point where you click.

Or, if I may add to that, from the point where you last clicked to the
point (up or down) where you shift-click.

Thanks for explaining. It's a bit more clearer. Is there not a way as far as
multiple deletes to selectively delete only the files I want without the
ctrl+left click. There are times that I need to delete many files (not
consecutive) and some of the files that are in between needs to be saved or
not not deleted.

Press/hold down the left mouse button with the pointer outside of an
icons/files parameter.
Drag the pointer across the ones you want to delete.
Release the button when you have the selected hilit.
Place your pointer outside of another set you want to delete.
Press/hold down the ctrl key.
Press/hold down the left mouse button.
Drag the pointer across the next chosen set.
Release the button when you have the selected hilit.
Want more deleted yet, ctrl+lc and drag.
Once you have your selection press Del/Delete on the keyboard.
