When I hit the shift key an unwanted dialog box pops up and will not let me
continue typing until i click the mouse. How do I correct this?

Are you sure you're pressing the Shift key and not the key below it that
opens the shortcut menu? It's the one to the right of the right Windows key
(called the "application key," I think) and has an icon of a menu on it (see
http://robburke.net/images/KeyboardApplicationKey.jpg).

I found this image at
http://robburke.net/2008/11/17/productivity-tip-remap-caps-lock-to-the-application-key-right-click/,
which explains how to remap the CapsLock key as an application key, so
perhaps something like that has happened?

Perhaps, but in order to hit that key my hand has to be turned awkwardly to
the left... however, that menu key DOES bring up the menu I mentioned.
Thanks. I'll practice refining my typing skills on this new keyboard (after
55 years of typing!).

If you don't think it likely that you are accidentally pressing the key
yourself, perhaps the fault lies in the keyboard. Is it old or dirty (the
two probably being more or less synonymous)?

I Thank all of you for your help.
I have disabled the "menu" key
and have not had another incident.
