SHIFT freeze

G

Guest

Please, can anyone help me with this problem:

When I hold the SHIFT key for few seconds, Windows XP "stops" until I
release it. I can't move the mouse at that time. A beep is produced when I
release. I tried it with WORDS and I noticed that after that it types only
uppercases as if CAPS LOCK is enabled.

The problem I face is that I always need to hold down the SHIFT key during
games. I do not want XP to "stop" at that time.

I have a dual boot XP/98, I do not have this problem with 98.

Thank you in advance,
Jacques

To turn off FilterKeys

FilterKeys is a keyboard feature that instructs the keyboard to ignore brief
or repeated keystrokes. Using FilterKeys, you can also slow the rate at
which a key repeats when you hold it down.

Open Accessibility Options....
Start | Run | Type: access.cpl | Click OK |

On the Keyboard tab, under FilterKeys, clear the Use FilterKeys check box.

Notes
* To open Accessibility Options, click Start, point to Settings, click
Control Panel, and then double-click Accessibility Options.
* If the Use shortcut check box in the Settings for FilterKeys dialog box is
selected, you can turn FilterKeys on or off by holding down the right SHIFT
key for 8 to 16 seconds (depending on the other settings you have selected
in the Accessibility Options dialog box). To open the Settings for
FilterKeys dialog box, open Accessibility Options and then, under
FilterKeys, click Settings.

I went to the accessibility options. StickyKeys, FilterKeys, and ToggleKeys
are all unticked.

(I mean when it says "use the shortcut" is unticked)

I enabled "StickyKeys" for a while to see what happens.

"StickyKeys" does a different beep when I press SHIFT.

So what happened was the following:

1)I press SHIFT -> "StickyKeys" beep

2)I keep holding SHIFT down -> XP stops :-(

3)I release SHIFT -> A different small beep

After this test I disabled "StickyKeys"

"Use The Shortcut" is unticked

I hope this would give you a clue.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Turn this feature OFF.

Here's a tip from David Candy

<quote>
Like Accessibility there is a trick here with general applicability.
Normally Caps Lock is on or off and stays on or off until the key is pressed
again. This can be changed to act like a typewriter at Start - Control
Panel - Regional And Language Options - Languages - Details - Key Settings
and one can select whether another Caps Lock press will turn off Caps Lock
or if pressing the Shift key will turn it off like on a typewriter.

Run Language Dialog then click Key Settings button.

I went to the key Settings and found the following:
“
To turn Caps Lock key:
“Press Caps Lock†is selected
“Press Shift†is unselected
â€
I have disabled “Hot Keys for input Languagesâ€

I made some tests and noticed the following:

1) Ctrl and ALT keys have the same problem then the SHIFT key

2) If I hold SHIFT down WITHOUT moving the mouse -> No freeze until I move
the mouse for 2 seconds

3) If I keep holding SHIFT for 2 seconds while moving the mouse XP freezes,
after that, there are two paths:

a) If I immediately release SHIFT when XP freezes -> I continues normally.

b) If, after XP freezes, I keep holding SHIFT for 5 other additional seconds
-> It continues as if SHIFT is always pressed (It will type uppercases and
select items as if SHIFT is held down). I need to press SHIFT again to
remove this effect.

4) I am no longer hearing the small error beep when I release SHIFT.

I hope this information will help you,

Thanks for helping me

What kind of keyboard do you have?

I would try a different keyboard.

All I could find about Turbostar keyboards was this...

<quote>
'Turbostar' keyboard, which uniquely features a 'turbo' button where the
'shift' button should be. I'm not entirely sure what particular function
this button has, except that sometimes it zips the cursor down the page very
quickly, so you have to use the 'delete' button multiple times. It is worth
noting at this point that the 'delete' button is also in the wrong place.

I couldn't even find who makes them, let alone what software they might use.

In Jacques <[email protected]> hunted and pecked:
Please, can anyone help me with this problem:

When I hold the SHIFT key for few seconds, Windows XP "stops"
until I release it. I can't move the mouse at that time. A beep
is produced when I release. I tried it with WORDS and I noticed
that after that it types only uppercases as if CAPS LOCK is
enabled.

The problem I face is that I always need to hold down the SHIFT
key during games. I do not want XP to "stop" at that time.

I have a dual boot XP/98, I do not have this problem with 98.

Thank you in advance,
Jacques

Thanks frodo, but we have already checked this possibility.

Now I borrowing a keyboard to test it on my PC.

I tried a COMPAQ keyboard. Whenever I hold SHIFT, CTRL, or ALT for 2 seconds
XP freezes until I release them.
It seems that the problem is from XP.
