Can anyone explain why holding shift while clicking
the "file open" button yeilds the "file save as" dialog,
and vice-versa, in Excel 97 + XP?

Have seen this occur on three different Windows 2000
workstations.

That's one of the little-known "features" of Excel. Holding the SHIFT key
reverses the function of many buttons.

I can't recall which ones other than the Font Size Increase or Decrease
buttons.

Perhaps someone has a list of the most common ones.

Increase/decrease indent.

But all I did was start a test workbook, put some data in the cells and
click/shift click.

(I don't use it either!)
