Shell cmd.com / command.com not running

Hello,

the shell cmd.com and command.com do not run properly on
my Windows XP pro SP2.

1)
If I start cmd.com using 'Start', 'Run' then
I only get the tiny black shell window without
showing a prompt, windows gets stuck within the shell window.

2)
Running command.com starts the shell showing a directory and path.
But doing there a 'dir' lists nothig, thought there are
many files in the directory.

3)
Starting a .bat file (which invokes cmd.com or command.com) by double
clicking it in the Windows explorer gives the error message 'Not enough
memory'.

What are the reasons for this errors?
How can I avoid this errors and get the command.com & cmd.com
back to work?`

Many thanks for any hint!

Regards

Hans

This is usually the result of a malware infection. Click Start / Run,
then type c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe {OK}, then report what
you see.
