What happened to my sheild icon? I think it's called the System Tray that it
appeared in. And I could use it to open up my settings etc for Windows
Updates.

Any program can use any icon that it wants in the system notification
area (aka system tray). Saying you have a "shield icon" says nothing
about what program put it there. Some anti-virus programs have a
shield tray icon. Some firewall programs use a shield tray icon. Of
all the software that exists or has existed, there have been many that
used a shield looking tray icon. I believe even the Windows Update
service uses a shield tray icon. If that is the one you are asking
about, why would it show its icon unless it detected that there were
updates available at the Windows Update web site? If it isn't there,
there are no updates available that are applicable to your host. If
there are updates and WU added a shield icon to the tray area, perhaps
you configured the tray to hide icons and then customized it to hide
the WU shield icon. Do you see a left-pointing chevron at the left
side of the tray area? If so, do you see the tray icon you want when
you expand the tray area?

You are likely referring to the Windows Security Center icon. It only
presents itself if a potential issue arises such as firewall, virus
protection or windows updates are being asked for. There are different ways
to launch it manually. Go to Start button->Programs->Accessories->System
Tools and click on Security Center

or click the Start button->Run and type the following then click OK
wscui.cpl
