Sharing problems

I have a couple of users at work who have trouble with sharing
violations when opening excel or word docs. If they open the document
from within Excel or Word then there is no problem, but if they
double-click on the document to start either Excel or Word then they
get a warning saying that the file is already open (by them, not by
another user).

Does anyone know how to get rid of this?
