Sharing Internet connection using Win2k "Shared Access" (share to 2 subnet)

I have a Win2k machine (lets call it Bigbox) with two USB ports. So I
went and bought myself two USB network adapter and hook them to these
two ports. I also have two laptops with built in ethernet. So I got
myself a little network set up or so I thought. By the way BigBox
also have built inside itself a PCI 10/100 Intel ethernet card which
nicely
connects to the big good internet through Cable MOdem. So Bigbox
really has 3 ethernet cards (ie 2 USB NIC and 1 Intel NIC). So far so
good right?

I hooked the two laptops to the win2k machines throught NULL ethernet
cables using the USB network adapters (192.168.0.1, 172.125.125.130)
above. I was able to ping the Bigbox from both laptops. And I am
able to mount BigBox shared drives from both laptops. Next I tried to
share internet connection from
BigBox so that my two laptops can both access the internet.

I went to Settings->Network and Dial-up Connections and launched the
properties from the main NIC (ie. the Intel 10/100mbps) and click the
Sharing tab. I clicked on "Enable Internet Connection Sharing for
this connection" and DOH!!! it only allows me to select one of the
two subnet to be shared. I see there "Local Area Connection 2" and
"Local Area Connection 3" for the two USB NIC adapters respectively.
BUT IT ONLY ALLOWS ME TO CHOOSE ONE. DOH!!!

So now Only one of the laptops can access the internet. GOT A
PROBLEM.!!

Also from the BigBox, I can only ping one of the laptop but not the
other. Even though both Laptops can ping BibBox. DOH! I GOT TWO
PROBLEMS.

What can I do? Could someone please help?

Get a DSL/cable router such as the Linksys BEFSR41. Each PC will need just ONE NIC and
would connect to one of the 4 10/100 switched Ethernet ports. Highly Recommended !

Why not bridge the connections?

What would that do? How do u do it?

You cannot bridge connections (out of the box anyway) in WIndows 2000,
this is in XP. The final result is that you will only be able to
share the internet via one NIC on the box, and ICS will set that IP to
192.168.0.1. As someone else mentioned, you should use another
device, like an internal router, to handle the routing issues before
the client hit the 2K box.

Thanks,
Nate
