Sharing files and printers from a Vista beta 2 desktop to XP

I had a home network set up between my wifes laptop and my desktop,
both machines running XP HOME. I was sharing printers, and a number
of folders. After installing Vista beta 2 on my desktop, the network
is broken. I can still access the laptop from the dektop, change
files, etc. However I the laptop can no longer access my desktop
correctly. it is allowed to browse all the files in the shared
folders, but cannot modify, add, or delete. All my printer sharing
has dissapeared as well when trying to print from the laptop through
the desktop. I’ve looked through all the vista networking, set it to
public, turned firewall off, made sure sharing is on, but still no
luck, any ideas?

If you have set Network Access to "Anyone who can connect to my network" and
have shared folders that allow write access, you must follow additional
steps to get write access to work properly.

These steps are necessary due to bugs in Windows Vista Beta 2, and should
not be necessary in the future.

Step 1:

- Click start
- Type: cmd
- Right-click cmd when it appears under Programs
- Click run as administrator
- If prompted for permission, click Continue
- Type: net localgroup users guest /add
- Press enter

Step 2:

- Click Start
- Click Computer
- Double-click on the drive with the windows logo in it (should be first one
listed)
- Right-click the Users folder
- Click Share...
- Click Advanced Sharing
- If prompted for permission, click Continue
- Make sure there is a checkbox next to "Yes, share this folder"
- Click Permissions
- Click Add
- Type: Everyone
- Press enter
- Click the checkbox next to Full Control under Allow
- Press OK
- Press OK
- Press OK

NOTE: If you were browsing your Vista computer when you made these changes,
you may have to restart the computer you were browsing from to notice these
changes.

Thanks Jimmy, this fixed my file sharing problem. Perhaps you can shed some
light on another problem that I am experiencing. When I initially installed
Vista I could use my wireless network to access the internet and my other
computers on my home network. I was experiencing other problems with the
installation however, (Control Panel would crash explorer) so I re-installed
Vista with a fresh install rather than an upgrade. This fixed most of the
Vista problems that I was experiencing, but now I cannot use my wireless
network to access my other computers. I can reach the internet through
wireless however. If I hard connect to my network I can access my other
computers. Any ideas????

Hello,

Windows Vista remembers settings for each individual network, and changes
you make to your network settings to one network (ie your wired network)
won't affect any other network (ie your wireless network).

While connected to your wireless network, make sure that you have your
wireless network is set up to be a private network, and that you have file
and printer sharing / discovery set to allow.

I have the network set up and private and fill and printer sharing/ discovery
set to allow. Yet I can't even see the Icon for that computer in Network
Places. The strange part is that I can see my Vista laptop from my XP desk
top over the wireless. But when connecting to my laptop over wireless I
cannot save to my files there as I am told that they are read only. I can
access and save to these files when hard connected to my network. Thanks for
your help.
