Buy a router. Either run ethernet cable up to the second floor or connect
wirelessly on the upstairs computer.

Malke

there are many configurations
and any of them can be costly.

if you choose to use a cable,
then you would have to route
it upstairs somehow and ensure
to add a network router to split
the signal between cables.

if you choose wireless connectivity
the you will need a wireless router
and the computer upstairs would
need to be able to receive the
transmission from the wireless
router

or you can simply by a dsl modem
for the computer upstairs and just
plug it into the incoming dsl jack.

Some modems come with a wireless router built in, see if your ISP can
provide you with one. If they can, all you will need is a wireless adapter
for each computer. If one of the computers is close to the modem, all you
will need for that one is an ethernet cord.

Buy a router ($25-50US or so). Also if you don't already have CAT5
ports on the two computers, buy a Network Interface Card for each of
them ($10US or so).

Run a CAT5 cable from each computer to the router, and establish a
workgroup network between the two computers.

Connect the DSL line to the router, rather than to either computer.

Alternatively, you can get a wireless router and wireless NICs for the
computers. That will probably cost a little more, and you may not get
a good signal between the two floors.

In my experience going through walls, brick, stone, etc. isn't much of a
problem. Most WiFi problems are do to other radio sources like cordless
phones, microwaves, other WiFi, etc. And if somebody can drive by your
house or you have neighbors within a few thousand feet, you probably
want to use secured WiFi.

I said "may not," rather than "will not." I wanted him to be aware
that that alternative will cost more and *may not* work as well.
