Sharing an external HD-gets read only

I have a dual boot with Vista HP & XP Pro. I have Word documents saved to an
external HD. When I open them, using Vista, I can't save, saying it's "Read
only". When I open properties it doesn't say read only.
My photo files can be opened by both.
Office 2007 on Vista and Office 2003 on XP.
How can I share between OSs?

Check if your Office 2007 is 'activated'. This used to be in the help menu,
I have no idea in Office 2007.
If it isn't activated, rather than telling you, everything is read only and
so you cannot edit files...

Are you sure you have all the permissions set up for the external drive?
That could be the problem.

Interesting that I see many with networking issues. Yet despite my
complaints about Vista, the networking has almost worked flawlessly between
my Vista, XP and Linux beasts from first boot. My XP machine has been
designated as the workhorse to carry my printers and also a 500Gb external
hard drive, and though slower across the network, can read and write to all
files on that external drive.

Can we assume that when you open these same documents from the hard drive of
the Vista box they open allowing you to save them?

R.
