Sharing a printer

I've got my home computer set up with a printer and scanner. I now have a
laptop that I wanted to set up a WiFi network with. So I bought a LinkSys
Wireless - G router(WRT54G). I've got it set up right now so that I can
access the internet on my laptop through it's WiFi connection. My problem is;
I want to be able to print from my laptop to the printer. The printer is
connected directly to my desktop. Both laptop and desktop are using Windows
XP. How can I do this ? When I use the 'Add Printer Wizard' and I get to
'Browse for Printer' the only thing that comes up is MicroSoft Windows
Network. If I click Next, I get the warning that 'I need to specify a valid
network printer name'. Any ideas would be a great help and appreciated, as
I'm a total newbie to the whole home network set up thing.

two ways to do it - either enable netbios to use computername or use the ip
address of the box with the printer i.e;; \\10.1.0.4\printer - If you have
netbios turned on then make sure that both systems are on the same workgroup
name ( although you should still see it) - make sure you have allowed the
remote logon the correct permissions - turn off guest account and create an
exact copy account with password etc and add to users for the printer.

Is there a "+" to the left of "MicroSoft Windows Network"? If so, click on the
"+", and then click on any additional "+" that look interesting. If the printer
is properly shared, the printer share should show up.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked

Do both computers have Windows XP? If so, all you need to do is run
the Network Setup Wizard on both of them: Start | All Programs |
Accessories | Communications | Network Setup Wizard.

If the Wizard detects the router's shared Internet connection, tell it
to use that connection. Otherwise, tell the Wizard that the computer
connects to the Internet through a residential gateway (router).

The Wizard will make all the right settings and share the desktop's
printer. The laptop will automatically find and install the shared
printer.

If there's a firewall program (Norton, McAfee, Sygate, ZoneAlarm,
PC-cillin) on either computer, configure it to allow access by other
computers on the local area network.

The flashing curser is to be expected. Did you read the browstat and command
window articles?
By redirecting the output, you can view it and / or copy it in a more convenient
way. Instead of typing
browstat status
type
browstat status >c:\browstat.txt
With the latter command, instead of getting the ipconfig output there in the
command window, all you'll see in the command window is another "C:\>". Then,
type
notepad c:\browstst.txt

And could you provide "ipconfig /all" for the other computer?

Both computers are running Windows XP. I have them set up now where I can see
shareddocs on both and also the printer is set up. But it won't print. I get
no error it just says "status - Printing

I got same problem while I was trying to share my in-network printer. You
should check if "norton internet security center" is being installed on your
desktop computer or not. If you have one as "norton" or other kinds of net
security software, you should disable it when you "add printer".
