sharing a printer with Win98 machine

Dave

Hello all,
I have two computers, a 98 machine and an XP machine
connected over a router. When I open the Network
Neighborhood on the XP machine, I can see the 98 machine
and copy the shared files from it. When I open the
Network Neighborhood on the 98 machine, I can not see the
XP machine. I would like to be able to so I can share a
printer connected to the XP machine. Can someone explain
how I let the 98 machine view the XP machine over the
network. I read something about "user permissions" but
couldn't find anything of any use in the help section.

Thanks for your help.

If the XP computer doesn't show up in Network Neighbourhood, this is a
networking issue not a permissions issue. The computer and the shares will
appear in Network Neighborhood whether or not you actually have "permission"
to access them. You will get an "Access Denied" pop up message or a prompt
for a password if it's a permissions issue.

1. check that the XP computer's name is less than 15 characters, doesn't
have any special characters, spaces or periods in it
Click Start, right click on My Computer, select Properties, select
Computer Name and look at the "Full computer name"
To change the Computer Name, click the Change button.

2. check that File and Print Sharing is installed and enabled (has a check
mark) on the XP computer
Click Start, Network Connections (or Control Panel, Network
Connections), right click Local Area Connection, select Properties

3. check that Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is not enabled on the Local
Area Connection
in the Local Area Connection Properties, select the Advanced tab

When you get the XP computer to show up in the Network Neighborhood of the
98 computer, you may not see any shares, even though you have created one or
more. Windows 98 will not see any share (file or printer) if the share name
is longer than 12 characters or has embedded spaces or special characters.
