shared word doc.

Hi all,
I have a word 2003 document which is shared on a windows network, I have
multiple users which access this particular document and they tend to open
it, view it and leave it open all day for reference. This document is
occasionally changed by technical document owner and this is my problem if
he changes content of document my users that have file open have and refer
to it have outdated information all day.

Question: is it possible to have word, advice users that have the document
open, that changes have been made to original immediately so they are not
referring to out of date document.

Thanks for any suggestions

If this is not possible is there a better way of achieving this goal?

Word doesn't have any feature that can do what you asked for.

If you store the document in SharePoint Server
(http://office.microsoft.com/sharepointserver), each user can subscribe to the
document (<http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa155740(office.10).aspx>) to
be notified whenever it changes. There may be other document-management systems
that offer a similar feature, but I don't know them specifically.
