Hiya all

Happy Easter to everyone!!!

For those of you who have been following the network etc... issue - all remains well.

My query relates to the fact that my family now have access to all my stuff which I don't want. I can't really be sure whether it's My Documents they can see or the new M drive. Either way, I want it not to be accessible to the family.

Can anyone walk me through this - I suspect it's dead easy to do.

Simple, easy instructions (as ever) would be greatly appreciated.

Love

Gabriella :)

Ah, now then ... :D

I was going straight into sarcastic mode then ... but I thought I'd have a weekend off.

Well, XP Pro is easier than XP Home ... ain't MS sad ... Anyway, in Pro you can right-click a File, folder or even the HD and go to Properties & Encrypt it ... in Home you will have to save the Doc with 'restricted permissions'.

Just threaten anybody with "Pain of Death" it they touch your stuff. ;)

I can go in to more detail, but I think you will get the hang of it. :thumb:

OH! ... DO NOT back-up your data in encripted form, ie CDs and stuff ... just hide them in a safe ... it can be one hell of a job un-encripting a file if you have the wrong keys.

Hello Mucks and Feckit

Sorted!!! Simple as 'make this folder private' - it was My Documents on the C Drive that they could see not the new drive which the expert prefixed with $ - apparently (learned something here!) the $ makes it hidden????

Well done ... anazing what right-click will reveal. ;)

Make sure you keep regular back-ups ... seen too many people looking for recovery programs.

Thanks Mucks!!

Am I right in thinking the $ sign on the M drive makes it secret?

I have been through all the users on the desktop and none of them can see my stuff now!!

Many thanks :)

Yes ... it is a reminder to you ... I think it should be blue in colour too ... or that may be for something else.

Hello Mucks, it's not in blue. This is what it says:

gabs$on'desktop(192.xxxxxxx)'(M)

[where 192. etc is the IP address]

What is it reminding me of?? I am not sure about that....

I am interesed in this!!

Funny you should say that :D ... I have a cracking bit of Stilton here too ... whoever invented the 'sell-by-date' gets my thanks ... it is bloody lovely.

Now I think this calls for a good bottle of wine ... ah, but then, I think I'll have it tomorrow.
