Shared folder missing from Network places.

When viewing "My Computer" I can see "Shared Folder" and can use it. However
it doesn't show up under "Network Places". The only thing that shows is "My
Websites on MSN". I just got a router for Christmas and hope to share files
between other computers - I'm getting too old for sneaker net ;)

Probably something I forgot, can someone point me in the right direction
please?

Mike,

You're probably looking at a browser problem, frequently caused by a
misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/07/advanced-windows-networking-using.html

You can maybe diagnose the problem, using logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig
/all", "net config server", and "net config workstation", from each computer.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely
(Download browstat!):

Hi Chuck, Wow that's a lot of info to take in!

1. Firewall (zonealarm) is off (I did try that 1st before posting)

2. "browstat status xxx" comes back with - unable to retrieve transport
list. Workstation Driver Not installed

"net config server" and "net config workstation" both are stopped and give
can't find the path error when replying "y"

I have not tried the laptop (the 2nd computer) with these tests yet as it
shows the shared folder as well as the router. Both (my version of shared
folder & router) of which are not shown on my desktop.

It looks to me that something does get started on my machine. How do I start
the workgroup up?

Many thanks

Mike

Run the Network Setup Wizard, and tell it to enable File and Printer
Sharing.

If a desired shared folder doesn't appear in My Network Places, click
"Add a network place" and follow the prompts to add it.

Hi Mike,

I'd start with the Network Setup Wizard.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-network-setup-wizard-in-windows.html

Then, I'd consider LSP / Winsock / TCP/IP corruption.

Hi Chuck,

We are getting closer, I can see the router now. Just not my folder. The
laptop still can't see me, but I suspect when I see my folder, it will too.
Gotta think positive! :)

I tried both ideas, tried the second one first - winsock fix for xp
after rebooting got where I am now. A registry fix I assume?

Then went back to - Any computer accessing shared data runs as a client. All
clients using Windows Networking should have:

- "Client for Microsoft Networks", in the network items list in Local Area
Connection - Properties.

they are there.

- "Workstation" service running - Started and Automatic.

not running, so I started it. Error msg:
Could not start the Workstation service on Local Computer.
Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.

How to I fix this? Another registry thing?

I tried this before & again after Chuck's. No difference.

I am starting to think it's a registry thing :(
