Using shared borders, text and images in main part of page
have disappeared when file is closed and reopened, but
shared borders still OK and all hyperlinks working

Shared borders and Include Pages are design time tools w/ the content (inside the <BODY> tags) of the Shared Border or Include page
"embedded" or included as html in your pages when you save any of the file(s) using them (or save the borders / include pages
themselves)

FP converts your page(s) to a series of tables to include the Shared borders, (which are really just a special case of Include
pages)
But FP can not build those tables if either your shared border page content or main page content has illegal html or broken tag
pairs
- usually due to missing </body></html> tags, or unmatched table / cell tags (unclosed table / cell tags), or some other unclosed
html block element

If you can see them using File Preview in Browser they will publish in as part of your pages

If you can't see them using File Preview in Browser, it's because FP can not build the included content tables, so you need to
validate and correct your broken html

confused!

Are you opening the site - not just the page

I've only started writing into first couple of pages on the
(not published yet)site so far, and am previewing either
of these pages in browser and then checking through the
links to the other blank (except for shared borders) pages

But for shared borders to work and stick, always open a FP web/site and work only on pages within the web/site (even if it is a disc
based web)

Not sure if this is the same thing or not, but I recently upgraded to FrontpageXP (2000) and I am having trouble with shared borders. When I open it to work on it, I cannot see or edit the shared borders at all, not in page view or preview. I happened to open the file using a browser and it opens just fine. This same instance holds true with new webs created. I can open the shared border the first time, but that is all.

Validate your pages for broken html tag pairs or provide a URL
- each version of FP is better a trying to correct broken tag pairs, but that also means prior errors come back to "haunt" you
