share a folder in a workgroup

Hi,

I am trying to share a folder in my PC1 and connect to it from my PC2 in the
same workgroup name. However, when I am connected to PC1, it does not
prompt me connected as and password screen (like in Windows 2000). The
windowsXP just let me in to that shared folder. When I look at property of
that shared folder in PC1 (share tab), There is only shared as check box and
allow user to modify check box. Is it possibly to prompt connected as and
password screen when I try to connect from my PC2 to PC1 shared folder?

Any help is appreciated...

If you have XP pro you can restrict shares by login name, but not by
password. If you have XP home Microsoft have (rather stupidly in my view)
decided that security is irrelevant and there is no obvious way to resrict
access. There is a back door method if you do not mind activating the guest
account with a password:

1. Activate the guest account
2. Go to start-run & enter "control userpasswords2"
3. set a password
4. all shared folders & drives are now protected by this password - only one
passord for everything though. (NB this work because all shared access is
designated as a guest user in XP home)
5. password can now be changed via adminitrator account if you want - but
that option only appears after you set up a password using the run command
above.
6. When youv'e finished complain to microsoft so they sort this stupid
oversight out for the future - most home users want to freely share music &
pictures but not let the kids see private letters, bank details etc. so
password protection of individual folders is essential.
