shadow file name

I have recently begun noticing that when I open a file in Word 2000 and then
go back to Open, a second gray version of the file name is there; e.g., I
open the file Norse and see another file named ~$rse or Africa and get
~$rica. Can't open these shadow files and can't get rid of them; they
disappear when I close the file. What is going on here???

These are temporary recovery files used in the event of a document lock up or
system crash.

If you click on TOOLS in the menu, select OPTIONS and click on the SAVE tab
in the dialog box you can set the time duration between saves for the
recovery document by using the spinner box to the right of SAVE AUTORECOVERY
INFO EVERY:. Once the file is closed the recovery document is deleted
automatically

They are Word's lock files - As Word is deleting them correctly, leave them
well alone!

They are *not* the AutoRecovery backup files (which have an .asd extension
and are stored elsewhere). They are the "owner files" that prevent anyone
else from opening the document for editing while you're working on it. See
