SFC won't start

system is XP Pro SP2, fresh clean install. Been having trouble with backups
due to MS Software Showdow copy service not starting so decided to try SFC
/SCANNOW. It won't start either. All I get is a command window that opens and
immediately closes again. Thoughts?

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
In the resulting Command Prompt window type:
SFC /SCANNOW and hit enter. Have your Windows XP
CD available as it may be required to be inserted in the CD
drive.

That doesn't work either. I don't remember the message it gave but it never
started anything, just immediately ended. Will run it again tonight to get
the message.

it works on my PC at work too, it doesn't work on my home PC. I'm not saying
the utilitie doesn't work, its just broken on my machine.

OK, just retried running it in a cmd window. Once again, it gives no error,
just returns me to prompt after a second or so. I don't believe it could be
checking the files that quickly.

If I just type "SFC" it gives me the help menu with command line options.
I've run it with the /SCANONCE option to see if it will work on reboot.

Thanks again for any help on this.
