sfc /scannow Won't work.

I am having a problem getting SFC to work. I have an OEM Version with Windows XP Media Center
Edition.
When the scan finishes after about 20 minutes it asks for the Windows Professional SP 2 CD. I only
have the 3 disc recovery set and also have that on my D:\Recovery Drive.
HP showed me how to change the path in the Registry from my E:\drive CD to both the C:\ I386 and
the Windows\I386 but it still asked for the Pro. CD's.
HP sent me a new set of Recovery discs and did a clean install but the problem is still there.

From what I understand Media center is Windows Professional SP 2 CD WITH all the bells and whistles
but it is only available on OEM Computers.

I would really appreciate any help on this.
Thanks.

Have a nice day.

Have a look at the Reg_Sz strings;
"SourcePath"
and
"ServicePackSourcePath"

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

(note that these paths should be one level above the \i386 folder)

Hi Dave,
They are both at C:\windows. That where my BIG I386 is. There is another one at the root (C:\) but
only has 7 files in it.

What happens if you browse to it?

C:\windows\i386

1. In Windows Explorer, click Folder options on the Tools menu

I did this in Control Panel/Folder Options I didn't know how to get this in Explorer. I thought
that was the desktop. I don't know where it is.

Anyway it did not work. Still saying "The CD you provided is the wrong CD Please insert the WinXP
Pro CD2 into your CD-ROM drive." I double checked it and all the changes were made. I guess this
only applies to Home Edition?

I have Windows XP MCE, and when that message comes up ... there should be a
message in Event Viewer telling you what file it cannot find (I believe ...
it's been a long time).

Check the Event Viewer ... there are some MCE files not delivered that are
present in the files checked on sfc /scannow.

Don't know what you mean? Do you want me to change the Setup Sourcepath and servicepacksourcepack to
C:\windows\i386?
I heard you should go up one step to just C:\windows.I saw that tip from a MVP here.

When prompted browse to the location.

From other posts you stated "The CD you provided is the wrong CD Please
insert the WinXP Pro CD2" Is this verbatum?

I found Event Viewer but don't know what it really is or where to look. There are 100's of files in
the 5 folders.
Application,Security,System,IntelDH & Media Center.
In Media Center there are no items to show. Maybe I should have done this when I ran SFC /scannow?

In other words. Is that the exact text of the error message?

There isn't a second CD-Rom for the operating system. Sounds like it might
be a version issue but hard to say without the exact text.

|I Think it was the exact message. Naturally, WinXP Pro. was spelled out.

this works for xp home, I think it will work for Media Edition.

Now, don't panic, it's very easy.
Insert your Media Center disk into the cd drive. If it starts up by itself,
exit out of the operation, but leave the disk in the drive.
Now, right click the drive and hit 'explore' and locate the i386 folder, the
larger one of the two that you mentioned.
Now, right click that and select 'copy'
Now, go to C:\ Windows, right click on an empty spot and click paste.
Okay, the first part is done, now on to part two.

Steady now..
go to the Start button, click that and on the right look for the'run'
button. Click on that and in that box type in this
regedit
then, hit okay.
You are now looking at the registry.
Look for this on the left side of the page,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
For each of these entries look for the plus (+) sign which will open and
expand each category as you go.
So, click on the + sign at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
follow down the list until you see
Software, click on the + sign and then look for
Microsoft, click the + sign, look for
Windows, + sign
Currentversion (notice the words have no space)
+ sign,
Setup. At this point there is no need to click the + sign, just click on
the word setup in order to highlight it.
Now, look in the right pane of the screen which is divided into two parts,
and locate the
entry called
sourcePath. If it does not say C:\windows, then you need to tell the
computer that is where you want the sourcepath to be, so, double click that
word, sourcePath, and there you will see a box that says 'value data' in
that box it will have the incorrect drive listed, what you want to do is
delete that and replace it with
C:\
then hit okay.
Now, try to run
sfc /scannow

What about the I386 folder that is already in Windows? I think that has files from ALL the restore
discs but not sure.
If I over Wright it won't I have troubles?
The Source path does say C:\Windows and you want me to change it to just C:\?
Maybe for safety sake I should put in a new folder since the root drive does have a I386 folder?

More information for you.
The three recovery discs all have windows\I386 folders
CD1= 795 files 23 folders, CD2&3 each have 2 files & 4 folders
My Windows\I386 has 6727 files 84 folders.
My C:\I386 has 7 files 3 folders.
If I do what you say I am going to loose 6000 Files!
