SFC /SCANNOW HANGS AT 40%

On an XP Pro/SPR P4 2.53Ghz/1MB RAM system, I get the error urlmon.dll is
missing at bootup.
If I try to run chkdsk it hangs at 35%, when I run sfc /scannow it says it
can not write the file urlmon.dll.
But it continues to run to about 40% on the progress bar then the machine
freezes. The mouse quits, the KB lights go out.
Any ideas?

Might be possible that your hard disk is failing.

Corrupt disc errors may indicate that the disk is failing. Try running a
full sector scan with HDTune..
