Hey all.

I wanted to know about two folders Vista has. First of, it's "winsxs" folder in Windows folder. To me, it looks like some sort of backup or something, so I wanted to know if it's safe to delete it.

Then there's the 4GB-large System Volume files located in root directory. I believe those are System Restore files, am I right?

The winsxs (Windows Side by Side) folder is used by the system to store
program library files that are used by other components of the system.
It's gonna be huge in Vista (Vista requires large modern hard drives), but
don't delete it if you want your computer to work. As a matter of fact,
you'll be safest if you just leave the Windows folder and all of its
contents alone.

Yes, the System Restore files are there. You can turn off system restore
for a drive (now called "System Protection") in Control
Panel\System\Advanced System Settings under the System Protection tab. But
if you're going to be trying to delete or make adjustments to things that
you don't understand, I'd leave it running so that you can undo any mistakes
that you make.

Yes to the second question. No idea on the first.

Thanks guys. It's not like I have no clue about files and stuff. But I know
enough about WinXP and not Vista, as Vista adds some more folders I've never
previously encountered.
