Several folder questions

ms

In C:

1. Windows Media Connect- what is this function? Can it be deleted?

2. Config.MSI- this folder has one file, 1ac30.rbf, 67 kb, 7/14/03
Can this folder be deleted

3. Documents/Settings

This is a used machine, there is a folder "Jay" for previous owner. I
tried to change the name, got error warning messages of effects on
installed programs, etc.

How to change the folder name?

Best way to take care of these concerns is to reload the factory restore
and put everything back to a clean system.

I am trying to get XP to a usable form for me. That is not the way to get
there.

Hi ms

Bob's advice is the best in your situation, really. . . with a used
machine, even if you know the owner personally, you can't be sure what
you're going to have to deal with. If you're lucky, it may only be a few
mistakes and misconfigurations, but it could be dodgy programs, malware
or even porn.

However, if you're determined not to start with a clean install, please
don't try to rename the Jay folder in Documents and Settings. That
folder will be linked to Jay's original user account and changing the
name could cause you an awful lot of grief if that's the account you're
currently using (which it sounds as if you may be.)

When you got the computer, did you create yourself a new account, or did
you simply change the login name from Jay to your own? Is Jay's account
still shown in Control Panel | User Accounts? If you're not sure, go to
Start | Run and type in the box: %userprofile% , then click OK. Where
does it take you?

If it's C:\Documents and Settings\Jay, the best thing to do would be to
create yourself a new account with a different name, log into it once
(you *must* do this first) then copy your current profile's settings to
it. Here's a link from MVP Ramesh that explains how:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/dupprofile.htm

Make sure everything is working as you want it before deleting the old
profile, which you can do from User Accounts.

Good luck -- let us know how it goes :)

When someone answers a specific question with "start all over from zero"-
no thanks.

There may be malware and I will find it, but no signs of that. The seller
was a senior like me, but not a computer person at all, so there may be
adware, spyware, etc. What I'm seeing is minor setting issues that need to
get squared away.

Thanks for the data.

I realize the entries in Documents/Settings are based on past installs, so
the only change I attempted was a name change for the user profile folder.
Got the usual "the sky will fall in if you make this change", so I left it.

If there is no clever trick to fool windows to keep everything in the
folder unchanged, and just change the name, I'll leave it. But I will look
into your data below.

Just did, good data, have to digest it.

Again, thanks.

The other 2 questions in my post were very specific, hope to get an answer.
