I had dual boot OS; XP on drive D and Win2K on drive C. I was using SATA
for the drives. I decided to reformat/reinstall 2K. I put the drive into
another computer using XP and repartitioned/reformat and set drive as
active. In the other computer I installed the newly formatted drive only. I
started the system using the 2K CD. I got the following error message:
Setup cannot load the keyboard layout file KBDUS.DLL. I cannot get the
drive to work in the original computer because of the SATA utility. I've
gone to MS Knowledge base and read Q239722. I'm not sure the resolution
listed here would apply to my problem since only one drive is install during
setup; although this is a SATA utility drive. Reading KB article Q246187, I
ensured that the user profile is the administrator on the other computer
before I formatted, still I got the error message. I believe if I could
install 2K with the SATA option, then the drive would work on the original
computer. Please help.

You will have to press F6 at the begining of the setup routine and
supply the SATA drivers on a floppy diskette. Pay close attention when
the setup begins, you will see a prompt at the bottom of the screen
telling you to press F6 for Raid or Mass Storage Device drivers.

Thanks for you help fellas, I have installed 2K on my secondary
drive...great! I inadverently remove the primary master drive (XP) from the
SATA configuration utility. If I start the computer using my XP CD, will I
be able to select F6 and install the SATA drivers then select repair without
loosing the data on the XP drive? Is there another way? Thanks for your
help.

Yes, it's pretty well the same with Windows XP. But you shouldn't need
to reinstall XP, how did you remove XP from the SATA configuration?
Can't you just "re-enable" it?

If the problem is that after you installed Windows 2000 you lost the
ability to boot XP in dual boot configuration, replace the files
NTDETECT.COM and ntldr in the root of the System (active) partition
(usually c:\) with the XP version of the files, the files can be copied
from your XP cd to the root folder of the System partition while you are
booted in Windows 2000. The Windows 2000 version of these files are not
aware of Windows XP and cannot boot it. The XP version of the files are
aware of earlier NT versions and can boot them.

I removed the XP drives from the SATA configuration by entering the utility
setup during startup and selecting the option "Press F2 to remove first
(HDD) set." The only thing I did to the actual drive was to remove the IDE
cable from the SATA PCI card. I reconnected both drives then started the
computer using the XP CD. I installed the drivers during the setup process
and cancelled at the installation prompt. Now my XP drive is recognized in
the BIOS during start up but it will not boot.

Does it boot if you change the boot order in the BIOS so that the SATA
drive with the XP installation is set to boot first?

I copied the ntldr and ntdetect.com files from the XP cd. Now the XP drive
will start up. I get "Invalid boot ini Starting from C:\Windows. In
explorer I get Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and
need to close error message. The second drive 2K does not show up.
