Setup up a LAN for gaming

Are there any good, detailed guides on how to hook new computers into
a LAN for a LAN party? I ask because I had a LAN party a few days ago
and we spent four and a half hours trying to get this one guys machine
to see the others in the LAN (I can't remember what we did, but we
fixed that) and even then he couldn't see games that we started.

I've never had this much trouble before and am looking for a way to
avoid such problems in the future.

BTW, all machines were running XP.
