Please does anyone know why i cannot upgrade to vista beta 2, message says '
setup has failed to perform upgrade compliance checks' why is this?

Gingersnake:
There is an upgrade path from Windows x86 to Vista x86.
There are no upgrade paths from Windows X64 or to Vista x64.

The upgrade option is "greyed (or grayed?)out" if you set BIOS to boot from
CD and install Vista.

Since when is it possible to boot from the Vista Beta DVD?
I understood that the only way to install Vista is from a previous OS like
XP.

MSFT's own web site recommends a clean install. Beta 2 is bootable.

Every Vista CD I've had, whether from Microsoft or burned from an ISO, has
been bootable.

It always has been. The first build I saw, 4078, was bootable.
