I'm trying to setup an XP laptop for a user who moves
between two sites. One site uses static IPs and the other
uses DHCP manager to allocate IP dynamically. He accesses
the same server from both sites so uses the same profile
on the laptop - but how can I set this up so he doesn't
need to change the IP when moving between sites - I don't
wan't to give him the admin permission to change the IP
and to be honest, don't want him to have to worry about
the IP change at all!

Hi, Jonathan -

If you look at the TCP-IP properties of your network
connection you'll see a place to enter a static
configuration if DHCP fails. This sounds like it's right
up your alley as the static configuration will be applied
if the machine can't find a DHCP server.

Hope this helps -

That sounds like an ideal solution, except that I thought
this was an either or scenario. If I go to TCP/IP
Properties I can either enter a static IP or leave the IP
blank and acquire a dynamic IP - there isn't an option to
obtain a dynamic IP and then use a static if that fails -
unless I'm looking in the wrong place! Please help!

When you first open properties on CtrlPanel-Network Connections (or
something like that), choose TCP/IP->properties
It'll open first on General-tab, and there is the other tab
(Additional/Optional Settingsor so). Place your static address there....

Hi

Go to the TCP/IP Properties page and on the Alternate Configuration you can
set a fixed IP there. That setting is available when your laptop can't
contact a DHCP server.
