Setting up Windows Mail for use with Google Mail

Hi,
I'm trying to set up Windows Mail to work with my Google Mail account but
I'm having problems.
I have modified the incoming/outgoing servers and changed the port numbers
to what google mail recommends, and I've also changed the POP settings on my
Google mail account to what they recommend. But every time I click 'send and
recieve' in Windows Mail it displays an error message saying it can't connect.
Why can't I get it to work?
Help greatly appreciated.
