Setting up VPN to use for RealVNC

Hello...i'm trying to set up a VPN so that I can put my mother-in-laws
computer within my home network and that will allow me a secure connection
over the internet to her computer so I can use realVNC to control her
computer to diagnose any problems that she calls me at 10:30pm about, instead
of having to try to understand what she is trying to explain to me over the
phone. However...being that i'm trying to teach myself as I go...I can't
seem to find any good detailed instructions on how to do this, including in
the windows help files (which have never been known to be too extensive!!!!).
I can use my realVNC great between my computers in my home network but i'm
having trouble using to connect to a remote place over the internet. Not
only that...I want a good SECURE connection to my mother-in-laws over the
internet before I try to VNC, etc. Another problem that I'm facing is the
fact that she uses dial up and I have dsl...that being the case ....her IP
address changes everytime she connects. Can I get around this issue also, or
do I have to have her IPCHICKEN in order for her to tell me her IP address
evertime I need to connect to her computer?

So if anyone would be interested in taking me by the hand here..I would
certainly appreciate it!!!! Or atleast point me to some good instructions!!

It would be much more simple if Microsoft would come out with a remote
assistace for preveious versions of windows so it's not restrected to XP. If
I had XP Proffesional instead of Home edition I would just use the remote
desktop connection!!

Thanks...

I'm still waiting for my mother in law to get home so we can attempt this,
but I want to make sure I got a general understanding of what is going on
before I start giving her instructions.

If I set this up correctly...it will allow me to connect to her computer
without getting her new ip address everytime she dials up tot he internet?
And I set up the ssh first and that provides me with a secure tunnel through
the internet in order for me to use Ultra VNC to connect to and control her
computer? Is it like Real VNC...the computer that you are connecting to is
the server and the computer you are using to conect to the other is the
viewer?

Also...I know this might sound totally stupid....but please bear with me...i
just want to make sure we are on the same page. I'm assuming that SSH and
Ultra VNC has to be installed on bothe machines in order to accomplish what
I'm shooting for here? I know I may be wishing for more than what is
possible, but I had to ask.

Correct me if i'm wrong....but unfortunately I either have to try to walk my
mother-in-law through this on her computer, or physically go there and do it
myself?

Thank You
Roger

Hi
If the other side is using DialUp the IP is dynamic and would be a different
one each time she log onto the Internet. It does not matter what you are
using for remote control the Dialup IP would change with each login.
So she has to start her computer get the IP and email you.
Setting VPN, SSH, Encryption, or any other secure connection is not usually
a task for a Novice.
If you only connect for purpose of helping through a dialup I doubt very
much that you need any special security.

You might want to start with regular remote connection using Ultr@VNC and
take it from there.

May be this can Help: http://www.ezlan.net/vnc.html

That's exactly what I thought ....I just wanted to hear it from an
experienced individual!! So how is this Ultra VNC going to fare with the
fact that her dialup is MUCH slower than my DSL? The whole reason I started
this ordeal, is because when I did this with RealVNC....I would have her
message me with her current IP address, but when I typed it in and hit ok I
would get this. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v611/rogval/vncpic.jpg

Like I said before I had no problem using this between the computers in my
own home network...behind my router. Then I read something about using Tight
VNC with dial up connections. Could that be my problem?

Thank You
Roger

You can kind of optimize VNC by not rendering the remote PC desktop wallpaper, but in general over a
dial up link it will be a bit slow... What OS does your mother run? If its XP Home then UltraVNC
also has an optimized video driver that helps along with its file transfer functionality. You could
also use the UltraVNC encryption plug-in versus running through a SSH or VPN tunnel.

In any case you either need your Mom to send you her current IP address or use one of the dynamic
naming services like No-IP.com.

If she is running XP Home and your running XP (Pro or Home) another option is Remote Assistance...

The data is encrypted like Remote Desktop...

Just so you know...I took out bottom half of this , because it was getting
too long to scroll down to the bottom of the message.

However....Unfortunately my mother-in-law has Windows 2000pro...which of
course will not let me use remote assistance, otherwise I would and it woul
be much easier. I have used remote assistance before to help fix a friends
computer and it is pretty handy and sinmple to set-up. I'm kind of surprised
that Microsoft hasn't come up with something to put on previous windows
versions so you can use the remote assistace with anybody. They did it for
Remote Desktop, you would think it wouldn't be too much more to ask to do it
with Remote Assistance....Unless ofcourse they have done that and I don't
know what I'mm talking about???? After searching all over Microsoft and
everywhere else, I sure haven't found it.

Now...as far as using that IP remember stuff....what if someone types your
domain into thier browser just by some fluke of chance....will that connect
them to your computer....seems kind of shaky to me?

Thank You
Roger
