does anyone have a great tutorial/reference for setting up an web server
using win xp pro? i've spent hours going through windows help files and
iis help files and haven't gained much ground.

would this post be better placed in a different news group.

ultimately i'm just looking to host my own personal sight..nothing
extravagant.

thanks.

XP is not really meant as an OS for hosting a Web Site. Pro does come
with IIS, but a 10 concurrent connection limit really limits your
traffic. Remember, this doesn't mean 10 "users" but 10 "connections"
and it is very common for one viewer to open more than one connection.

If you truly want to host your own web pages, you would be better off
getting a Server OS such as Server 2000 or Server 2003.

On a side note, if you do start your own web hosting, serving your own
pages at home on a Web Server, be aware that you ISP usually has the
right to terminate your connection with them. Very few ISPs want to
give you the bandwidth to do this - at least, at residential prices.
If you want to pay commercial prices, then they won't say a thing.
