Setting up home file sharing over ethernet

D

D. Glenn

We're running WinXP Pro SP2, and have a home network over ethernet lines.
We'd like to be able to share files among the various computers in the house
but STILL keep our computers secure from outside access. (We use Windows
firewall AND a hardware firewall on the router.)

My questions are these:

1) If I use Simple File Sharing - and right-click on a folder and choose
Share This Folder on the Network - does that mean that any computer in the
house that's on the network can access it, but any computer not in the house
cannot? Or have I just made things easier for outsiders to hack into?

2) Is there a way to set up in-side-the-house access with a password?

3) What's the best and most secure way to allow computers inside the house
to acees each other, but still maintain maximum security from those outside?

Thanks in advance,

tw

Make sure you explicitly block both TCP and UDP port 135 ~ 139 and 445 on the Router.

The firewall in a home broadband router prevents other Internet users
from accessing your computers. So does the Windows Firewall. Your
shared files have two layers of firewall protection and are safe from
outside access. You don't have to do anything else.

Windows XP doesn't have passwords for shared folders.

With simple file sharing enabled, all users on all of your computers
can access all shared folders. With simple file sharing disabled, you
can specify which users can access which shared folders. Ron Lowe and
I have written a web page with details:

That's great for Pro, but I'm using XP Home Edition. From my laptop, I can see my desktop on my network, but it will not allow me access to it. On my desktop, since I'm Home Edition, I can't get to Group Policy, can't get to Local Policy, I have no idea how to fix this. Help!!!
